JAMA STUDY ANALYZES FDA WARNINGS OF OVER 700 SUPPLEMENTS CONTAINING UNLABELED PHARMACEUTICALS

A group of researchers recently analyzed FDA warnings reported between 2006 and 2016 of unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients found in over 700 different supplements produced by 146 different companies. Products marketed for weight loss, sexual enhancement, and muscle building were the most common offenders. The products contained adulterants such as sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, sibutramine, the active ingredient in a weight loss drug that was removed from the market, and synthetic steroids or steroid-like ingredients. About one-fifth of the products contained more than unapproved additive, and 19 had more than one warning issued in the same year. In response, the Council For Responsible Nutrition published a statement urging consumers to avoid products that make outrageous claims, purchase from reputable companies, and consult a physician before starting new supplement regimens.

Consumers have a right to know what they are ingesting. This knowledge is especially important for individuals taking medications because unapproved additives can lead to drug interactions. If you think you are a victim of adulterated supplements, contact us today and tell us your story.
